Recent History of Clear Creek
Recent History of Clear Creek
During the 1930s the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) built the automobile highway along Clear Creek Canyon (currently Highway 6), replacing the railroad. A 1939 painting of the workers building the road hangs inside Golden’s downtown post office.
In the Early 21st century Clear Creek is enjoyed for its recreational opportunities: sightseeing in Clear Creek Canyon, mountain climbing, amateur gold panning, kayaking, tubing, and canoeing on the race course of Golden’s “Whitewater Park.” Additionally, pedestrian/bicycle paths in the Clear Creek valley are well used and are continually being expanded. The entire Clear Creek Canyon, from its mouth at Jackson’s Rapids to its western divide at Forks, belongs to Jefferson County Open Space which has plans for major improvements in the provisioning of new bicycle/pedestrian trails and facilities along its length. Much of Clear Creek’s pains route has also been preserved as open space, particularly along the Wheat Ridge Green Belt.
The bridge you stand on today was built in 2003, in order to accommodate Golden’s worst flood events and to provide a place for community members and visitors to contemplate the history of the Clear Creek valley.
