1. Women of Fort Mose Marker
Inscription. Though it may be called Fort Mose, you quickly realize that the community is far more than just a military outpost. While the militia is made up of men, the women of Fort Mose are just as essential to its survival. Growing food, crafting goods and running their own businesses, the women have fought just as hard to keep their freedom and are ensuring that this thriving community continues to prosper.

Many women attempted the difficult journey from plantations in the Carolinas to Spanish Florida. Of the first group of Black freedom seekers to reach St. Augustine, eight were men, two were women and one was a 3-year-old child.
