Inscription. For over 70 years, a concrete dam stretched here across the West Branch DuPage River. It was scenic, but it wasn't environmentally friendly. It limited the movement of mussels and fish and collected sediment and plant debris in its upstream pool. As the trapped materials decomposed, they stripped the water of dissolved oxygen, which aquatic animals need to remain healthy.

In 2011 crews removed the dam and enhanced the river using "ingredients" of natural waterways. Today, wildlife big and small are benefiting from this revitalized resource.

Boulders, Root Wads and Tree Trunks
When submerged, these structures provide underwater habitat for fish and aquatic insects. They also form "eddies," quiet whirlpools that move against the current.

Riffles
These partially submerged rocks are oxygen-generating powerhouses. Water rushing around them creates oxygen bubbles that then dissolve. The rocks are also habitat for aquatic insects and small fish that don't mind the swift current.

Vortex Rock Weir
Next to the riffles, deeper rocks form a "vortex rock weir." This chute for canoes and kayaks generates whirlpools that

Plants
Native plants added to the banks and floodplain limit erosion, filter pollutants, shade and cool the water, and provide food and shelter for wildlife.
