Blessings of Leeward Life
The giant ocean nursery before you, Ma'alaea Bay, lies us the cradle of Maui's leeward coast, to your left.
This sheltered coast is often called South Maui. It boasts of rich seas, accessible beaches, and the sunniest weather of the island.
Hawaiians settled here by around 1000 A.D. By the 1800s, ships brought whalers, traders, missionaries and laborers from other lands.
Places precious to these early residents remain today, strung like pearls along the shoreline. To find them, look for other South Maui Heritage Corridor signs from here to Makena.
Local Resources: Women plaited pandanus mats to cover floors and steeping platforms. For long walks over rough lava, they wove sandals from leaves or bark.
