Tula's Rehabilitation Monument
Hoogachtend,

Tula's Rehabilitation on October 3, 2023
On August 17, 1795, Tula addressed his fellow enslaved people at the Kenepa plantation, protesting the injustice they were being subjected to. He fought alongside Bazjan Karpata, Louis Mercier, and Pedro Wacao, among others, for freedom and equality.
On September 18, 1795, Tula was betrayed and sentenced to death based on a statement extracted under torture. He was subsequently gruesomely executed on October 3, 1795, next to Fort Amsterdam.
In 2010, Tula was officially rehabilitated and declared a national hero by the government of Curaçao.
Today, on October 3, 2023, 228 years after his death, Tula will receive rehabilitation from the Dutch government.
She fully recognizes the justice of Tula's struggle, and that of others who resisted slavery, and looks with regret and shame at the way they were treated by their historical, administrative predecessors.
On behalf of the Dutch government, I declare today the rehabilitation of Tula and recognize him as a hero of
Curaçao and all of us.
Sincerely,
The State Secretary for the Interior and Kingdom Relations, Kingdom Relations and Digitalization
