1. Cuban Anticommunist Political Prisoners' Plaza Marker
This Monument is dedicated to the men and women who suffered long sentences, torture, repression, inhuman treatment and cruelty in prisons when facing the Castro-Communist tyranny beginning in the year of 1959.
To their families and relatives who were also victims, subjected to humiliation, and suffered from the absence of their loved ones throughout their captivity. To those who lost their lives while remaining prisoners of conscience because of lack of medical care, malnutrition, and the murders committed by their jailers in forced labor camps.
The number of political prisoners in 62 years of the Communist regime is estimated at more than 18,000. It is also estimated that more than 8,000 have lost their lives during incarceration. The real number may possibly be known only after the tyranny is defeated. The suffering continues today as the regime jails are full of political dissidents. Historic responsible for this tragedy are the Communist Party of Cuba, the State Security Department of the Ministry of The Interior and its Department of Jails and Prisons.
This sculpture, commissioned by the Presidio Politico Historico Cubano organization, was created by renowned Cuban sculptor Arnaldo Serru, inaugurated on September 1st, 1986. It represents the moral and physical strength of those imprisoned because of their ideas. The brotherly intertwined hands hold a torch that calls for enlightenment, guidance, and hope while symbolizing life, truth, and the regenerative power of flame.
Este Monumento está dedicado a los hombres y mujeres que sufrieron largas condenas, tortura, represión, tratos inhumanos y crueldad en las cárceles al enfrentarse a la tiranía castrocomunista a partir de 1959. A sus familiares y allegados, quienes también fueron víctimas, sometidos a humillaciones y sufrieron la ausencia de sus seres queridos durante su cautiverio. A quienes perdieron la vida siendo presos de conciencia por la falta de atención médica, la desnutrición y los asesinatos cometidos por sus carceleros en campos de trabajos forzados.
Se estima que el número de presos políticos en 62 años de régimen comunista supera los 18.000. También se estima que más de 8.000 han perdido la vida durante su encarcelamiento. La cifra real posiblemente solo se conozca después de la derrota de la tiranía. El sufrimiento continúa hoy en día, mientras las cárceles del régimen están llenas de disidentes políticos.
