History Of Investigation:

1926:
First definitive of the Batesville Mounds site was made by Calvin Brown in his book, Archaeology of Mississippi, after his 1906 and 1919 expeditions to the site.

1950:
William Haag identified the North and South Village areas and filled out a site card for the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

1968:
Avocational archaeologist Glen Johnson led the excavation of the McCarter Mound located north of the Batesville Mounds and reported on it in 1969.

1990-1992:
Mimi Holland-Lilly conducted auger surveys to determine the limits of cultural material around each of the Batesville Mounds.

1991-1995:
Four seasons of University of Mississippi field schools focusing on the north and south village areas were directed by Dr. Janet Ford.

1996:
Dr. Jay Johnson directed excavations in Mound B and the south village for the Center of Archaeological Research at the University of Mississippi. A study of the ceramics from this excavation was conducted by Rodney Stuart.

2002:
A study of fire-cracked rock from Mound B was conducted by John Sullivan.

of the late Howard Mize, a local businessman and partner in The Panolian newspaper, who stopped development of the site as was originally intended in future expansion plans for the nearby industrial park. Instead, the land which makes up this park was donated to the City of Batesville for preservation. Amateur archaeologists and city officials undertook the effort of raising funds for the park, and the park's Delta Wilderness trails were developed with the Eagle Scouts of Panola County.
