Inscription.
Addeline was the wife of H. Pelton and died at the early age of 22 years during childbirth. She is one the earliest recorded burials in Monroe, predating the sale of the property to Brooklyn Township in 1836. Her tombstone is the type that is frequently found in 18th and very early 19th century cemeteries in New England. Death at that time was viewed as a wholly devastating occurrence and attitudes about death were often encrypted on the grave markers. This attitude is found on Addeline's marker in the following inscription:

"Sacred to the memory of
Mrs. Addeline Pelton consort
Of Mr. H. Pelton who departed
this life Oct. 2, 1827 in the
22nd year of her age.

Benevolent she lived, Virtuous she died
Now lies at rest, her infant by her side.
Yet oft dear wife the spirit lingering near
Will listen to the husband's lonely tread
And watch the silent lonely pensive tear
Which drops to consecrate thy dreamless bed."

The term "consort" in late 18th and early 19th century nomenclature was not a reference to a mistress. Note on the marker that Addeline is referred to as "Mrs. H. Pelton". If a wife died before her
