Gambier in Knox County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
River of Life
The Kokosing River is known for its great natural diversity, but it also sustains people. It nourished Native Americans for centuries and delivered our first pioneers by canoe. Today it mixes with the groundwater that we drink, and its calming beauty supports our economy and our wellbeing.
One of Ohio's Finest
The Kokosing River is one of a handful of select "State Scenic" rivers recognized by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Preservation of natural areas along the river's banks is part of what makes it so special.
Forests and floodplains along rivers prevent bank erosion and filter pollutants and excess gill-clogging sediment from the water. They also protect our safety and our property by absorbing and slowing floodwater.
