The earliest written record of the species was found in Eastern Asia and China. Koi were introduced to Japan by the Chinese about 200 A.D.
Life Span
The average life span for koi is 25 to 35 years. Some have reportedly lived up to 200 years!
Varieties
Although variations of koi are limitless, breeders have identified and named specific categories. Koi with more than one color are unique because there are no two that look exactly alike.
Koi in the Wild
Koi have been accidentally and deliberately introduced into the wild on every continent except Antarctica. They greatly increase the turbidity of the water because they are constantly stirring up the bottom. This makes waterways unattractive, reduces the abundance of aquatic plants and can render the water unsuitable for swimming or drinking even by livestock.
