Inscription.
The Alden Homestead, principal Duxbury home of Mayflower passengers John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, is marked by wooden posts which outline a foundation discovered and excavated by Roland Wells Robbins in 1960. The property is part of an original land grant received by the Aldens in 1627, and has been archaeological interest since the 19th century, when historical artifacts were found in the area. Assisted by Alden Kindred of America member Russel W. Edwards, Robbins located and excavated a field stone foundation, 38 by 10 1/2 feet in size, with evidence of a deep cellar hole underneath the western end. Excavating mainly inside this foundation, they recovered one of the richest assemblage of early 17th century cultural artifacts found anywhere in the United States to that date. The dating of these artifacts by national experts suggested that the Alden family lived at the site from roughly 1630 to as late as 1675. They also found many Native American artifacts, suggesting that Alden built on a site of earlier habitation. A self-taught archaeologist, Robbins was an important early pioneer in the field of historical archaeology. The Alde site represented his work at its peak as well as the leading edge of his field, which makes the site important in the history of archaeology in the United States. Artifacts and data from the site continue
