Indigenous people first grew beans (mashkodiisiminag) from wild legumes native to the Americas.

Beans are native to many places in the Americas. Varieties include green and black; lime, mesquite, tepary; and scarlet runners.

Most Three Sisters gardens include common beans, sometimes called bush or pole beans. Pinto, navy, kidney, and wax beans are all varieties of common beans. The beans are planted in mounds next to the corn, which gives them something to climb as they grow.

Many traditional recipes include beans. They are easy to grow, nutritious, and a good source of fiber and protein.
