Historic Old Town in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Niagara Region, Ontario — Central Canada (North America)
Our Carolinian Forest Zone
There are more species of plants and animals in the extreme south of Ontario than anywhere else across the nation, including 1/3 of Canada's rare and endangered species. This is afforded by its proximity to the equator (by Canadian standards), resulting in short, mild winters and a generously long growing season. This allows species typically found down in North Carolina and South Carolina to survive at their northernmost limit here.
Here are a few national high records to appreciate in the Carolinian Forest:
- Approximately 70 species of tree, 56 reptiles and amphibians, and 400 bird species logged along the Niagara River corridor.
- Classic Carolinian Forest species present in Niagara-on-the-Lake include: pin oak, black oak, scarlet oak, tulip tree, sassafras, paw paw, Virginia creeper, Baltimore oriole, Acadian flycatcher, and spotted gar.
Did you know:
- Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to three species of treefrog
- Some of the oldest (250+ years) and largest oak trees reside along the Niagara River close to where you are standing
- The Carolinian Forest zone and wine country overlap almost perfectly on a map
- both the wildlife and vineyards enjoy our easy-going winters and long growing season
The Carolinian Forest and its unique species are under threat from habitat loss. Looking around where you stand, you can observe how 90% of this original ecosystem has been removed since European settlement. Thankfully, education and conservation efforts continue to protect this natural treasure in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
