1. Israel Newton Stiles Marker
Born: July 16th, 1833, Suffield, Connecticut
Died: January 17th, 1895, Chicago, Illinois
A lawyer and Indiana state legislator, he became a popular orator in the 1850s and gave more than sixty speeches against the evils of slavery. He enlisted in the Union Army at the start of the Civil War. He was captured at the Battle of Malvern Hill and was confined at Libby Prison. Upon his exchange he was promoted to major of the 63rd Indiana Infantry Regiment. He fought gallantly under General Sherman during the Atlanta Campaign. At the Battle of Franklin, Stiles commanded a brigade that faced repeated attacks by the enemy. For his bravery and service he was brevetted brigadier general.
He married Jenny C. (Ellis) Stiles, the daughter of an early Loda settler, Thomas Ellis. After the war he practiced law in Chicago and was elected city attorney in 1870. The General often returned to Loda to visit his investments. After his death he was laid to rest on this site by the side of his wife.
General Stiles was remembered by older Loda citizens as a man of splendid qualities who commanded the respect of all.
