1. THe Wurrundjeri Marker
The Wurrundjeri Aborigines occupied this area for thousands of years before European settlement. They spent their summers beside the wetlands and waters, moving up into the sheltered woodlands in winter. Their known camping places in Mt Evelyn were beside Olinda Creek and at Billygoat Hill. The figure sitting in front of the bark shelter is wearing a possum-skin cloak. The name Wurrundjeri refers to a kind of edible grub found in manna gum trees.

The Wurundjeri People take their name from the Woiwurrung language word wurun meaning the Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) which is common along Birrarung (Yarra River), and djeri, the grub which is found in or near the tree.
