1. A Gateway to America’s Everglades Marker
Covering 1.5 million acres across Collier and neighboring counties, Everglades National Park, established in 1934 and dedicated in 1947, preserves the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. As the first park created to protect a fragile ecosystem, it supports endangered species like the Florida panther and American crocodile, and recharges South Florida's freshwater supply.
For decades, the flow of fresh water that previously nourished the Everglades was disrupted and diverted, leading to harmful discharges in the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries and robbing the Everglades and Florida Bay of the clean water it relied on. Thanks to the joint commitment of the State of Florida and U.S. Government, restoration efforts are underway to restore and rehydrate America’s Everglades.
