This summer house was used as the field kitchen for over one hundred men and over a dozen women who made up the garrison in St Stephen’s Green during the Easter Rising of 1916.
The field kitchen was run by Mary Hyland and Kathleen Cleary who supplemented supplies with food requisitioned at gunpoint from local suppliers and bread and milk carts from the streets outside the Green.
The summer house was also used for shelter to sleep in on Monday night, the 24th of April.
The women had to abandon the summer house in groups of twos and threes, under heavy fire, when British forces commenced firing from the Shelbourne Hotel opposite here.
