1. Squant Marker
Squant is the protector of water voyages.
Squant features prominently in our stories. She is a great being that oversees the health of the plants. especially berries. Squant was said to be married to Moshop the great giant who dragged his toe, causing the water to wash in and separate Martha's Vineyard from the mainland.
Moshop left the lands here, as he heard that newcomers were going to arrive and make things very difficult. Moshop's children also decided to leave, and so Moshop tossed them to the sea where they became killer whales. Then he tossed his wife Squant to Sakonnet, and as she landed, she turned to stone and would forever watch over her children of the sea.
Our people would come ashore every time they traveled by Squant and leave gifts for her protection as we traveled the ocean, until the practice was outlawed by the English.
