1. What a View! Marker

Inscription. Before a tower ever stood here, people came to this spot for a commanding view of Green Bay. The first humans to look over this cliff arrived shortly after the glaciers retreated. Imagine what those early people thought when they walked up to this edge!

Eagle Tower I
1914-1932 Using timber cut in the park, workers first raised the center pole. They used the center pole to hoist the four corner poles into place. To reach the tower's full height, each corner required three poles stacked on top of each other, with platforms between the separate poles. Although the park built the tower as a fire lookout, they knew visitors would enjoy it.

Eagle Tower II
1932-2016 Construction workers used horses, tractors, and other modern machinery to build this tower out of Washington State red cedar. They wrapped cables around nearby trees to raise the poles. Look for a stump still wrapped with rusty cable along the road leading to Eagle Terrace.

Eagle Tower III
2021-present Using cranes and lifts, workers built this 60-foot tower from fabricated timber. You can reach the top of Wisconsin's first accessible observation tower

As you climb the tower, look for ways engineering protects natural resources while allowing people to enjoy nature.

Ramp to the Top
The angle of the accessible ramp never exceed a five percent slope. Take advantage of level spots and benches to rest along the way.

Cross-laminated Timber
Watch for beams and posts fabricated by using structural adhesives to bond several layers of boards together at right angles. The resulting product is lightweight, strong, and environmentally friendly.

CCC Legacy
Amazing engineering is nothing new. During the winter of 1936, young men enrolled in Camp Peninsular's Civilian Conservation Corps constructed the wall and viewing area around the tower and the pump house (now a shelter) across the road.

The tower closed in 2015 due to structural concerns and was torn down in 2016.
