On these grounds on September 30, 2022, Phyllis Webstad (Northern Secwepemc, Stswecem'c Xgat'tem First Nation), whose story inspired Orange Shirt Day to observe the legacy of the Canadian Indian residential school system, met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose government established Orange Shirt Day as a designated statutory holiday in Canada called National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The events held here, which included a sunrise ceremony, consultations between the Prime Minister and residential school survivors and their families, official remarks by delegates and the orange illumination of Niagara Falls, recognized the tragic impacts residential schools have had on Indigenous families, communities, cultures and languages. On the evening of September 29, a concert entitled TREATY: A Reconciliation Revelry was held on these grounds, focusing attention on Indigenous contributions to Canada and the challenges posed by the legacy of Indian residential schools, landing on uplifting notes centred on truth, reconciliation, understanding and respect.
