1. Tidwell Cemetery Marker
According to the inscriptions on the cemetery's headstones, the first burial in Tidwell Cemetery, located beside the Byler Road, was Sarah Tidwell, born and died in 1862. The home of Sarah's family, including her brother, Peter Tidwell, born in 1844, was located nearby. Their father, Andrew Jackson Tidwell, purchased the land in 1858, after emigrating with his parents from Georgia about 1831. As Union sympathizers during the Civil War, Fayette County residents harassed the family and threatened 18-year-old Peter for his Union sympathies.

Of the threats, Peter stated, "My property was taken by the Rebels, and I... had to go into the Union lines for protection. At 19, he joined the First Alabama Cavalry and enlisted as a private in Company B. In 1864, he was honorably discharged as a corporal. After the war, Peter turned to farming and postal work. He died in 1928 and is buried here in Tidwell Cemetery. Peter's father Andrew served as the postmaster of nearby Dublin for over 42 years. Andrew died in 1920 at age 99 years. 10 months, and 11 days.
