1. The Walked Before Us Marker

Inscription. This scene captures a 1910 view of Main Street looking west, just around the corner, including the trolley that ran between Rochester and Syracuse. There were many businesses on Main Street that served area residents, including the hardware store in this building. The man with the vegetable cart is Ira Purdy. Purdy's General Store ran in the Village for over 100 years. The Masonic Lodge building still stands on the northside of the street. For artistic purposes in this mural, there is a historical mural on this building in the picture, showing the Native Americans that lived here prior to 1800. The different animals and birds shown are part of the clans of the Seneca Nation. Above, upper right, the Macedon Mills which were fed by the creek beside the Village, next the 1867 anti-slavery Liberty Party convention, where for the first time in U.S. history, women received votes to nominate them for national public office. On the left, the Macedon Academy, where eloquent and prominent abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke to students in 1851. He also spoke at the Baptist Church on Main Street in the late 1840's. Having been an active abolitionist and women's rights advocate she had votes to nominate her as the first woman Vice President of the United States at the 1847 Liberty Party convention at the Macedon Locks and was a friend and colleague of Frederick Douglass.
