1. The Tappan Marker
Indigenous people, known as the Tappan, lived along the western shore of the Hudson/Mohicanituck River and the Sparkill Creek during the 17th Century. Where you now stand was a transport hub where the Tappan, known as the "Keepers of the River Crossing," used "mooxools" (canoes) to control over sixteen ferry crossings.
They believed every individual had dignity and worth and lived in harmony with nature. Abundant resources provided for hunting, fishing, gathering and farming. Disease, conflicts and acts of violence during colonial expansion drove them from this land. While they no longer inhabit this area, they have left behind an indelible legacy.
