Cracker Horses
| — | Old Town St. Augustine | — |
Florida cowmen were nicknamed "Crackers" because of the sound made by their cow whip cracking the air. This name was also given to the small Spanish Horses used for working Spanish cattle.
Working the fields, transporting people, goods and services, Cracker Horses were indispensable in the daily life and development of St. Augustine. Horses also played a major role in the Spanish American, Seminole and Civil wars.
