"Mother" Mary Bickerdyke (1817-1901)
A veteran of over 19 battles, Mary Bickerdyke revolutionized battlefield medicine and was known to soldiers as "Mother." As a compassionate role model, she prioritized life and health above all. In 1862, as Chief of Nursing, she organized hospitals for General Grant's army along the Mississippi.

With the help of the U.S. Sanitary Commission, Mary built 300 hospitals, setting new standards in soldier care during the Civil War. Her success came from her medical skill and ability to win over military leaders. Though she often clashed with army procedures, General Sherman once said, "She outranks me!" Her tireless efforts earned her the nickname "Cyclone in Calico."

Later, Mary marched with General Sherman, cooking, cleaning, and caring for the ill. After the war, she worked with the Salvation Army in San Francisco, became a lawyer, and resettled hundreds of veterans and families in Kansas. In Salina, she opened a boarding house, offered legal services, and supported the needy until her death.
