The First Nations were valued as friends and military allies by the first European settlers. They helped the newcomers survive by sharing their knowledge about hunting, farming, and travel. But, this relationship changed after the War of 1812. Local First Nations were encouraged by the New England Company to give up their "wandering ways" and settle in permanent reserves.

Today, there is a revival taking place for local First Nations. Together with the move towards self-government, there is a renewed interest in traditional decision-making, healing, language and artistic expression as the foundation for a better tomorrow.

The Circle
The circle is a powerful symbol for many First Nations and especially the Ojibway (Anishinabeg). On one level it represents the sun, moon, earth and therefore, life. Since it has no beginning and no end, it goes on forever.
