1. Tulip Poplar Marker
Inscription.
Botanical Name: Liriodendron tulipifera
Common Name: Tulip tree, tulip poplar, yellow poplar,
Mature Size: 60-120 ft. tall, 30-50 ft. wide
Bloom Time: Spring
Flower Color: Yellow-green, orange
Native Area: North America

The large showy flowers high in the tree are a source of nectar for bees, the sprouts and buds are consumed by deer and birds, and squirrels eat the seeds. Indigenous people made a tea from the bark to treat upset stomach, rheumatism, and fever. Early American settlers used parts of the tree as a remedy for coughs, a means to treat fractured limbs, cuts, insect and snake bites, alleviated headaches, and soothe burns. According to a 1931 sales receipt from Towson Nurseries in Maryland, this tree was 16-foot-tall when planted here at Dumbarton House.
