Inscription. The Meskwaki people made jam from the sour black berries, or haws. Black haw bark is used to treat gynecological problems and is popular for menstrual disorders. The Cherokee people also used black haw bark for fever and as a tonic. Older scientific studies identified compounds in the plant that could relieve muscle spasms. Black haw is traditionally used to prevent miscarriage. However, there has been no modern research to show that it is safe or effective.
