1. Site of Schooley's Mountain Mineral Spring Marker
Inscription. Located across the street and known by the Native Americans for its healing properties, the spring flowed from above the exposed rock outcropping and was a popular 19th century destination attracting visitors to the nearby grand hotels.
 
Erected 2011 by Washington Township Historic Preservation Commission.

Location. 40° 48.764′ N, 74° 49.092′ W. Marker is in Washington Township, New Jersey, in Morris County. It is in Schooley's Mountain. Marker is on Schooley's Mountain Road, half a mile north of Newburgh Road, on the left when traveling south. The marker is 0.10 miles before the pullover parking area for Cataract Park, a township hiking area. Touch for map. Regarding Site of Schooley's Mountain Mineral Spring. The marker memorializes a famous chalybeate mineral spring, known to the Leni Lenape natives that developed into one of the first health resorts in the United States. Known as Schooley's Mountain Springs it served the wealthy of Philadelphia and NYC, including several US Presidents and Joseph Bonaparte who came to stay in the summer hotels.
