1. The Geology of Roxborough Marker

Inscription. Looking at the habitats of Roxborough, it's easy to understand how geology shapes the landscape that supports plants and animals. It's what's underneath that makes the difference in what's on top. I can see so many differences here - oak brush, aspen, spruce fir, prairie and riparian habitats in a relatively small area.

This layered landscape reads like a story that spans millions of years.

Chapter One: granite foothills to the west.

Chapter Two: red rocks of the Fountain Formation.

Chapter Three: Lyons Sandstone left over from ancient streams.

Chapter Four: Dakota deposits on the easter hogback ridge.

The tale continues as uplifts expose layers and erosion creates valleys, a story that never really ends.
