The Melbourne Gaol Men's Hospital. . , The Melbourne Gaol Men's Hospital , (1865-1925), Beneath this lawn, lie the bluestone wall footings of the Melbourne Gaol Men's Hospital where Victorian bushranger, Edward (Ned) Kelly was nursed back to health, before being tried for murder and hanged in 1880., The two storey bluestone Hospital (1865) was surrounded by a single-storey covered verandah (1876). The Hospital provided two wards on the ground floor and probably two wards on the upper floor. The building measured 14 metres long (the length of this step) by 10.2 metres (north into the lawn)., The Hospital Building was demolished in 1937 to make way for the now Police Vehicles Garage. The Imprint of the south wall is etched in the bluestone slab covering the south wall footings. The width of the Hospital can be imagined from the markers on the stone edge of the lawn at the east and west sides. These footings may have been from the Gaol Infirmary of 1855, then adapted for the later Hospital., The plan of the Hospital footings, found by the archaeologists in 1999, is shown on the site history plaque., The Melbourne Gaol Men's Hospital , (1865-1925). , The plan of the surviving footings of the Melbourne Gaol Men's Hospital, which are preserved under this lawn.
