Distinguished Service Medal Historical Markers
The Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity with the United States military, has distinguished themselves by exceptionally meritorious service to the Government in a duty of great responsibility. This is NOT strictly a wartime decoration and is NOT to be confused with the Distinguished Service Cross/Navy Cross/Air Force Cross Recipients nor the Valor in Aerial Operations (which includes the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal) series, both found under the "Valor in War" grouping. This series includes comparable foreign military decorations, including the now-discontinued (1993) British/Commonwealth Distinguished Service Medal which was initially awarded only for bravery and resourcefulness at sea, but does NOT include DSMs awarded by states and non-govermental organizations. This series is for named recipients, shown on the marker.1 ► Alabama, Cullman County, Holly Pond — Governor Guy Hunt — |
