The Grand Army of the Republic Historical Markers

This national organization of Union soldiers, sailors and Marines, formed just a year after the Civil War ended, placed hundreds of monuments and memorials across the North and even some areas of the South. Besides commemorating their comrades, the GAR also was a potent political advocacy group for patriotic education, Black veterans' voting rights, federal veteran benefits, and making Memorial Day a national holiday. It had more than 400,000 members at its peak in 1890, but was dissolved when its last member died in 1956. It was succeeded by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. This series includes monuments and memorials erected by the National Woman's Relief Corps, and the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, each a GAR auxiliary.
